Things to do in and around Jeffrey's Bay

Jeffreys Bay is the Gateway to the Garden Route

  • 1 hour from Port Elizabeth Jeffreys Bay is a buzz of activity in December and over the Easter period when most South Africans suffer from holiday fever but, a lot more peaceful most of the year round, except of course when there is surfing competitions and the shell festival (not much to do with shells), when everyone comes from all around the area (even JHB) to sell their years work and show off their creative talents to the locals.
  • Take a day trip for a  picnic in Baviaanskloof Nature Reserve in the direction of Hankey, Loerie and Patensie en route to Willowmore, where orange coloured sandstone cliffs, aloes, proteas, arums and wild fig trees contribute to varying scenes of great indigenous  beauty.
  • SOMETHING SPECIAL (Bartholomews Rest Guests only) -  Join a 3 day 4 x 4 guided tour to visit the canyon. Rates apply. Subject to availability and season
  • One can stop along the way  and see the Kouga Dam or a magnificent  indigenous Yellowwood forest, just before reaching Hankey.
  • Rent a sea faring canoe on a calm day to test your fishing skills
  • Picnic at a nearby waterfall
  • St Francis Links Golf Club- Short drive
  • Visit the light house at Cape St. Francis
  • Beach Horse Riding- nearby at Paapiesfontein Nature Reserve +-15km
  • Hike up Noorsekloof gorge
  • Charter a fishing trip for shad, sharks,  grunter, sharks, steenbras and musselcracker, Oh! and did I mention sharks.
  • Take a day trip to Addo Elephant Park, although quite far a 1 night stay over makes it worthwhile.
  • Treat the kids with a visit to the Billabong clothing factory shop in town
  • Climb the 204 spiral steps at the 52m Campernile in Port Elizabeth next to the railway station
  • Have lunch on the harbour in Port Elizabeth
  • Bay World in P.E will keep the kids enthralled watching dolphin shows and discovering the marine life in the same complex
  • You can see white lions at the Seaview Game Park on the way
  • Take a small canoe trip up the nearby Gamtoos River
  • Apparently there is a huge 4 X 4 rally near Paradise beach in December , but if you're an expert you'll probably know about that.
  • Live entertainment in town in December
  • Let us know if there is something we missed and can add to the list.

How to get there

By plane, train or car arrive in Port Elizabeth. Take the N2 from Port Elizabeth towards Cape Town.

Take the first Jeffries Bay turnoff after crossing the Gamtoos River (about 90 kilometers outside of Port Elizabeth). Turn left at the t-junction. At the Stop sign turn right. After about 15 kilometers and just after crossing Kabeljous river,  turn at the first left turn which becomes  da Gama (the main road) road in Jeffreys Bay
